Fine Arts

 

Oil Painting/Drawing

(Ages 15-Adult)

Instructor: Diamond Vigil

Are you ready to loosen up and discover a style of your own? You will learn the effective use of color relationships, mass, and values while you paint from a photograph.

Drawing

Instructor: Ashley Ramos

Drawing is learned skill based on hand-eye coordination using the drawing principles of line, shape, value, texture, perspective and composition.

Clay Hand Building

(All Ages)

Instructor: Sally Anne Finkelstein

In this class you will be introduced to the many techniques of handbuilding. Once the student chooses a project, the instructor will assist him with the multiple techniques of constructing the piece.

Wheel Throwing

(Ages 16-Adult)

Instructor: Nancy O'Brien

Students will learn the basics of how to throw on the wheel.  Students will be provided with 25 lbs. of clay and the use of all Firehouse glazes.

Wheel Throwing

(Ages 18-Adult)

Instructor: Bob Sloan

This class will focus on the basics of throwing shapes on a wheel. It will cover preparation of clay, basic tools required, controlled use of whell and the formation of shapes and the methods used to accomplish this.

Open Pottery Studio

Students 18 and older with prior ceramics experience may sign-up for open studio use of the ceramics room.  The fee covers use of wheels, and glazes. Firing only done by Firehouse personnel when kiln is full.

Tuition: $25 a month

  

Open Drawing Studio

Develop or expand upon your medium of choice in our ballroom. Bring your supplies and use our facility and easels to create your own artwork.

Weekend Workshops

 

Clay Sculpting

(Ages 16-Adult)

Instructor: Bob Sloan

This class will focus on sculpting a waterfowl form using porcelain clay. The class will begin with preparation of clay, basic carving of form and detail work for the finished product. The form we will work on is a duck decoy.

Saturdays in Asia (Ages 6-12)

The two day workshop begins with a wild Gallery Hunt exploring the Firehouse Gallery February exhibit, Asian Games: The Art of Contest and moves through various arts forms originating is Asia. Participants will make the Japanese memory card game, karuta, using printmaking techniques, make paper to write haiku, learn to play go and pachisi and observe a Tea Ceremony, make kites and uchiwa, and learn the art of dominoes. Don't miss this opportunity to explore another culture.

Let's Get Organized

(Ages 18-Adult)

Instructor: Nancy Meza

Learn the art of organize your space to create a sensible flow for your home. Discover how to help the clutter-bug you know. Go home with fresh ideas to get started on the process.

Pinhole Camera

(Ages 5-15)

Ever wondered how to make a camera? Students will leran how to make a pinhole camera and develop their own unique pictures in our darkroom.

Embellished Calligraphy

(Ages 16-Adult)

Instructor: Joyce Terry

Come learn new calligrpahy techniques from around the world. Watercolors and embossing will be used to enhance classic calligraphy.

This class will take students through the basics in ballet and tap technique.

In order to learn Hip-Hop, you will learn step by step how to create combinations, and then put them together into dance.

Adult ballet classes offer a fun way to tune and tighten your body while learning the fundamental techniques of ballet. Adult ballet classes offer something for every age group, from young adults to seniors.

Yoga

Yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibilty. This is done through poses and postures, each of which has a specific physical benefit.

Beginner Guitar Lessons

These lesson will take you from pure basics such as learning to identify the G string to playing major full chord shapes and reading music.

Culinary Arts

 

The Joy of Wine

(Ages 21-Adult)

Instructor: Jeff Mahl

This course provides students with knowledge that will enhance their enjoyment and understanding of wine. Students will learn how to recognize and select good wines, as well as identify wine regions. The course will also provide instruction on proper serving techniques, the elements of wine tasting, how to properly pair wine with foods, and how to read wine labels.  Three wines will be tasted per class.  Stemware will be provided.

Metal & Jewelry Arts

 

Scrap Metalsmithing 

(Ages 16-Adult)

Instructor: Jen Cooper

The class will make sculptures out of recycled metal parts using various metalsmithing techniques.

Jewelry Beading

(Ages 15-Adult)

Instructor: Sylvia Ramirez

Tool, beads, findings, etc. will be provided and you will leave with multiple pieces of jewelry which you designed.

Tuition: $45 ï 8 Classes 

Students must provide wire cutters, chain nose pliers, round nose pliers and cloth to work on 

Photography

 

Black/White Photography & Beginning Darkroom Class

(Ages 15-Adult)

Instructor: Dee Cerda

Students will learn the fundamentals of the Holga camera, its quirks  and subtle nuances. Students will learn the basics of capturing and printing an image. Film developing and review will allow us to evaluate and adjust exposure, fine tuning the camera to obtain the best possible images.

Community Open Darkroom

(Ages 15-Adult)

Instructor: Dee Cerda

This is for students needing extra time to print and practice the photo techniques taught in beginning darkroom, and for photographers wanting a place to print. Green chemicals and some equipment provided; bring your own paper.

Available during regular

Open Hours only

Tuition: $5/hr-1hr min. or

$100 unlimited month

Call at least one day in advance to schedule darkroom time.

18 and older with prior darkroom experience required

or enrollment in darkroom classes

 

Supervised Open Darkroom (Ages 15-Adult)

No experience necessary. Printing and Chemical preparation.

Chemistry provided; Students should have their own film and paper.

Supplies available at DRCA office.

Literary Arts

 

Youth Poetry Society

(Ages 11-18)

Instructor: Omar Chavez

Learn about different types of poetry and influential poets. Every member will also participate in poetry readings of their own material. The goal is to become exposed to the vast world of poetry and develop confindence to express themselves through poetry.

Knitting/Crochet

Learn basic to intermediate skills for both knitting and/or crochet. Students will focus on reading patterns. Basic knowledge helpful.

In this class, the student wil get hands-on experience and learn the fundamentals of weaving. Learn to weave an 18"x18" 12 color sampler blanket on a loom.

  • Classes may cancel due to insufficient enrollment, students will be notified by phone
  • Full refund are given only if class is cancelled by the Firehouse
  • If a student wishes to cancel before the first class day a full refund less 10% will be given
